Newborn Visits Q & A

When should I schedule a newborn visit?

Prior to your baby’s birth, feel free to reach out to Dr. Tak and the team at St. Francis Multispecialty Medical Group to establish a relationship and learn what to expect at a newborn visit.

You’ll want to schedule your baby’s first newborn visit within a few days of your discharge from the hospital. This visit provides important evaluations about your baby’s baseline health and growth.

What happens during a newborn visit?

During your baby’s very first newborn visit, Dr. Tak gathers important medical information and details about your pregnancy and delivery.

He also performs a comprehensive physical exam of your new baby. The team specifically evaluates your newborn’s:

  • Height and weight
  • Skin health
  • Body temperature
  • Heart rate
  • Head circumference
  • Reflexes and movement

Dr. Tak also takes a look at the site of your baby’s umbilical cord to ensure it’s healing and free of infection.

Your baby may also receive the first of many important vaccinations to protect them from serious diseases like measles, mumps, and whooping cough.

What happens after a newborn visit?

The staff at St. Francis Multispecialty Medical Group creates a schedule of future visits for you and your infant. Plan to visit Dr. Tak every few months to closely monitor your baby’s growth and development. Once your child reaches age two, the frequency of these visits slows to just once per year.

What resources are available for parents at newborn visits?

A newborn visit to the office of St. Francis Multispecialty Medical Group is important for mom and dad, too. Dr. Tak can educate you on how to best care for your infant when it comes to diet, sleep, hygiene, and illness. He provides tips on bathing, swaddling, and, if relevant, circumcision.

If your child is suffering from colic or diaper rash, or already shows signs of teething, Dr. Tak provides tips and conservative treatments to soothe the baby’s discomfort.
